Conor McGregor UFC news: Notorious reveals how he spent his first big pay cheque

Conor McGregor has revealed he gave a 'big chunk' of his first UFC pay cheque to his mother - and splashed out on some tailored suits.

The Crumlin man, whose rise from humble beginnings is well known, had a clear plan when he made his first fortune.

He told GQ: "It was after my UFC debut in Stockholm [in 2013]. I won the Knockout Of The Night bonus, which was $60,000.

"My pay for that night was $10,000 to show and $10,000 to win, [so] I walked out of the arena with an $80,000 cheque.

"The first thing I did, I took a big chunk of cash out of it out and I gave it to my mother."

McGregor, who talks in the interview about being "obsessed with materials" when it comes to fashion, then headed to a famous Dublin tailor.

He added: "The second thing was going to a tailor in Dublin city centre. My father, growing up, had always said, 'You know you're successful when you’ve got a fully tailored suit.'

"That stuck in my head for so many years. I went straight into a suit store called Louis Copeland & Sons – it’s famous here on Irish soil.

"I spent about eight hours in there, talking and chatting. They kitted me out with suits. I wanted a fully custom-made, tailored suit on my skin, that feeling of success.

"I wanted to take that with me to the next chapter of my life. That’s what I did with my first paycheque."

Asked to describe his first suits, the 31-year-old claimed to have made dickie bows fashionable in the fight game.

"At that time, I brought in dickie bows. I was in the prelims on the UFC card and the prelim fighters don't get brought to the press conference.

"You go in, you get some money, you fight, you get the fuck out of there. But I knew I was different.

"I knew I was going to steal the show. I knew I was going to secure the knockout and I knew I was going to get called to the post-fight press conference.

"So I packed in a dickie bow. And I packed in my grandfather's coat. They say a good suit is like a plate of armour. I well believe it. It wasn’t a full suit, but it gave me that plate of armour and that confidence."
