Conor McGregor UFC news: Notorious reveals he is taking inspiration from LeBron James

Conor McGregor has told how he has curbed his spending habits after taking a leaf out of the book of basketball legend LeBron James.

The Crumlin man, 30, admitted to becoming "obsessed" with flashing his cash on flash cars and designer items.

But McGregor revealed that he gave up the material life after he was inspired by 34-year-old LA Lakers star James.

The UFC star said: "LeBron James spends $1.5 million annually on himself. I saw it and said, 'I spend ZERO'.

"When a camp forms, I gather a team of people and go to the Vegas desert and do insanity work.

"It's an insane game. But it's not all in. It's halfway in. You can't be that way in the fight game.

"If you're in a game you need to be all in with it. I've only taken this philosophy recently."

He added to the Tony Robbins podcast: "I've had dips in commitment but I'm feeling in a great place."

McGregor explained that his new attitude prompted him to hire a entourage of people for his personal health.

"For so long, in my mid to late 20s when I started to acquire wealth I was obsessed with material things. I would buy myself cars and watches.

"I switched off on that now. I realised I was spending on material items but not on myself - on my fitness, my health.

"Now my nutritionist travels with me full-time, my doctors, my training partners, my coaches.

"I have a full team but it's all for fitness and peak performance. We've got to be in shape.

"A trait of the successful is to wake and train early."

Meanwhile, McGregor is set to make a rare public appearance at the grand opening of John Kavanagh's new SBG Ireland gym.

The new state-of-the-art facility will replace the Notorious' old Naas road stomping ground as his coach revealed the grand opening date on social media this evening.

According to Kavanagh, the opening day for members is set for August 12 - while a grand opening for the public will take place on September 21st and the former two-weight UFC champ is expected to attend

In a Twitter post, Kavanagh said: "Opening day for SBG Ireland members Aug 12th. Grand opening for public with Conor McGregor and some special guests Sept 21st, save the date!".

Mirror Sport was told by a spokesperson for the gym that it is expected to be almost twice the size of their current home, and will cater to people at all levels of the sport.

They said: "The facility will be one and a half times the size of the Long Mile Road facilities and is based a few minutes away in the Golden Bridge industrial estate, Inchicore.

"John has been talking about this for the past four or five years and is really excited to start using the new gym."

Kavanagh told the Irish Mirror: "There is a perception that the new gym will be for fighters only but it couldn't be further from the truth.

"The new facilities will be for everybody from the age of four to 75 and we will have programmes suitable for all levels from beginners to elite fighters.

"You can email us at info@sbgireland.com to ask us anything or if you want to get involved."

The 'Godfather of Irish MMA' hopes to give the Irish Mirror a sneak peek at the site in the first few weeks of August before the facilities officially open for business.

Kavanagh, who coaches a number of high profile MMA stars including Artem Lobov, Charlie Ward , Dillon Danis , Peter Queally, Sinead Kavanagh, Richard Kiely and Gunnar Nelson said in a statement to gym members: "It is with great pride and excitement that I present to you our new home, SBG Ireland HQ 2019.

"I am looking forward to spending many weeks, months and years training here with you helping you realise your fitness and martial arts goals.

"It has been a long time coming.

"I opened my first ‘full time’ MMA gym in 2000 (The Shed) and since then have slowly but surely worked towards having a state-of-the-art facility such as the one I present to you now."

The old facility was the base for Conor McGregor's training camp in the lead up to his historic second UFC title win against Eddie Alvarez, and has also welcomed celebrities such as Joe Wicks and WWE Superstars Sheamus and Becky Lynch .
