Conor McGregor UFC News: Notorious misses out on Khabib rematch as Russian confirms fight with Dustin Poirier

Khabib Nurmagomedov won't be fighting Conor McGregor next, as the undefeated champion is set to fight Dustin Poirier in his second title defence.

The Notorious has been training for a UFC comeback, but was left with an injured wrist after a session recently that has put a halt to his return.

And in the meanwhile, interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier has signed on to face Khabib at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi on September 7.

In the aftermath of McGregor and Nurmagomedov's last bout, there was a post-fight brawl which saw both men pick up suspensions and fines.

Khabib was banned for nine months and fined $500,000, while McGregor was suspended for six months and fined $50,000.

Poirier had to go through Featherweight champion Max Holloway to earn the interim title in April while the 27-0 Dagestani sat through his suspension.

And now the pair are set to meet at a controversial UFC event in the Middle East, after Khabib signed a deal to make him reportedly the 'highest paid fighter' in the organisation.

The champion's manager told MMA Fighting: “We’re extremely happy. We’re well taken care of. We can’t ask for any better. We very grateful. Easiest negotiation I ever did.

“It was fair, straight to the point. This is one of the biggest deals in UFC history. I don’t care about Conor McGregor, I don’t care.

"This is one of the biggest guaranteed money contracts in UFC history. When you do this kind of deal, people normally burn bridges. The bridges only got stronger, that’s all I’m going to say."
