Conor McGregor UFC news: Notorious issues plea to 'genius' coach John Kavanagh over rekindling relationship

Conor McGregor has told of his shock over hearing his coach John Kavanagh did not re-watch his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The Dubliner, 31, lost to the Russian last October 6 at UFC 229 in Las Vegas.

And in interviews following the bout, the UFC star's trainer Kavanagh spoke of how he hadn't watched the fight back.

McGregor said: "I felt a little bit slighted when these interviews were going on and one of things was that ‘I hadn’t watched the fight back yet’.

"When I heard that, I’d watched the fight back 888 times before I even got back to the house.

"To hear that he hadn’t watched the fight back – I was a little bit taken aback."

Kavanagh, 42, has been an ever present feature in the Notorious' corner since his UFC debut in 2013.

McGregor revealed that his relationship with the MMA coach, who founded Straight Blast Gym Ireland, needs to be rekindled.

But speaking to ESPN's Ariel Helwani, the Crumlin native added he plans to fix things up and get the "genius" back in his corner.

He said: "Myself and John. You know, I need to rekindle my relationship with my coach and get that back on track also.

"John is a genius at the fight-game and having him in my corner is essential, you know what I mean?

"I understand that my half-committment has led to these thoughts and this type of thing. I’m just in the process of making things right and we’ll get there. John will be in my corner, no doubt."

McGregor said in the interview he believes he'll make a return to the UFC by the end of the year.

And he surprisingly mentioned 37-year-old Frankie Edgar was firmly on his radar.

He said: "You know who else is at the top of the list, Frankie Edgar, is also right there, up there at the top of the list.

"Because he has similarities to Khabib [Nurmagomedov]. Runs on the back foot, shoots on the single leg.

"I want these types of similar bouts and also Frankie has been very respectful. Frankie has always been respectful.

"There are so many bouts for me but it doesn't matter, it's about getting back in and being who I am, not a shell of myself, not half-committed."

He added: "I'm already in shape, I haven't lost my condition, I just need to sharpen up the grappling. I would look for that, for the end of the year."

The fighter sensationally "retired" earlier this year, be has now opened up about how he needed a break from the sport, adding that he doesn't think he will ever retire.

He said: "You don't understand the things going on behind the scenes, sometimes I just need distance, [then I say], hold on, I've rushed.

"My foot was a balloon when I walked into that fight [against Nurmagomedov]. I've got all the footage backed up from that entire camp, I broke my foot three weeks out and it was a balloon.

"I tore my leg to shreds before the [Chad] Mendes fight. I've done so much for this company, fought back to back to back.

"I've certainly laid bricks down in this game and when things are going on backstage and between my inner team and outer team, sometimes I need a break but I don't think ill ever retire from this game. It's in me and I'll take it to my grave."
