Conor McGregor UFC news: Notorious gives insight into his diet ahead of fight return

Conor McGregor has given another insight into the diet that has him primed for a return to the octagon.

The UFC star will fight Donald Cerrone on January 18 - his first bout since losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov last October.

And the Crumlin man has given fans a glimpse of the diet fuelling him for the Las Vegas showdown.

Posting on Instagram, the 31-year-old showed off a bowl of mixed fruits, a deep green-coloured smoothie and the many liquids that form part of his daily intake.

Recently, McGregor revealed he has a weakness for coffee and cake.

January 18 will see him fighting at 170lbs and the Dubliner told that if he ever cheats on his strict diet it is for something sweet.

He told Men’s Health: “I don’t eat takeaways. I don’t eat none of that.

“I’ll eat good-quality meats, good-quality greens, good-quality carbohydrates like sweet potato and butternut squash, and that is it.

“I have a sweet tooth — that would be where I’d put on some weight out of fighting, if somebody brings in a pack of cakes and coffee.”

McGregor, a former two-weight world champion, has gone from a featherweight to fighting at welterweight in the UFC.

And to fuel his gruelling training regimes, the Crumlin man has detailed his dietary habits.

“I eat good meat - chicken, salmon, some steak - and a lot of quality greens and some fruits like bananas.

“I eat eggs - an omelet with my Americano for a late breakfast or brunch.

“Getting enough protein is important when I train, to help build muscle and recover, so I’ll supplement with protein shakes.

“I drink mostly water or coconut water. It’s important to stay hydrated - first thing I do in the morning is stretch and drink water. ”

There is room in strict diet though for some good old-fashioned rashers.

The Notorious previously posted a picture of a feed on Instagram and the plate was packed with rashers, potatoes, mushrooms, peppers, spring onion and eggs.

“We focus on food for performance,” McGregor told Askmen.com. “Giving my body exactly what it needs for the physical training. My diet is usually pretty consistent whether I’m training for a specific fight or not.”
