Conor McGregor UFC news: Notorious congratulates 'inspiration' Katie Taylor after Bray boxer becomes two-weight world champion

Conor McGregor has congratulated Katie Taylor after the Bray boxer defeated Christina Linardatou to become a two-weight weight world champion.

The UFC star hailed the 33-year-old Olympic champion as an "inspiration" after her historic achievement.

McGregor wrote on Twitter: "What a fighter!

"5 time world champion across 2 weight classes. Wow! #Inspiration."

The undisputed lightweight queen added the WBO super lightweight title to her illustrious collection with a unanimous decision.

The Bray boxer never looked in real trouble throughout as she fended off a stubborn challenge from the Greek champion.

The win paves the way for a potential super-fight against greats of women's boxing such as Amanda Serrano or Cecilia Braekhus - with a grudge rematch against Delfine Persoon.

Taylor was pushed from the bell, fending off an aggressive start from Linardatou - with both landing clean shots in the opening round.

But Taylor settled into her rhythm and was soon picking her moments thanks to her superior movement.

Linardatou did land clean shots however, troubling the Bray native when Taylor was backed into the corners.

Taylor landed her first big shots in the fifth round with a beautiful one-two and followed it up with some beautiful combinations.

Taylor dominated the following two rounds, but the defending champ got a second wind of sorts in the seventh - landing a lovely left hook to edge the round.

The eighth brought the fight to life, with both fighters trading wonderful strikes. But Taylor held on in the ninth to keep ahead on the scorecards.

A classy final round ensured that Taylor was the one with her hand raised in the end.

After the fight, Taylor revealed plans of fighting seven-weight champ Serrano, Braekhus and as well as a potential rematch with Persoon.
