Conor McGregor UFC news: Notorious' coach John Kavanagh's Khabib v Ferguson 'pandemic' claim backfires

The world we live in today is a lot different to the one just ten days ago, and John Kavanagh will surely agree.

With the coronavirus pandemic causing the world to shut down to fight the Covid-19 outbreak, sport has taken a hit with the majority of events cancelled and just a handful now still standing.

And the ongoing crisis has developed rapidly over the past week, seeing Conor McGregor's coach and SBG supremo Kavanagh eat his words.

On March 8, Kavanagh took to Twitter to claim that the only thing that will get in the way of McGregor foes Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson's April 18 fight is a 'pandemic virus' before adding that will 'never happen'.

Fast forward a few days and UFC have now postponed their next three events, but insist that they're exploring all avenues to keep the fight on track.

But with the coronavirus pandemic now looming over just about every sporting event for the next few months, Kavanagh's claim looks to have backfired.

And he took to Twitter to acknowledge the mishap yesterday.

He said: "Me and my stupid mouth".

UFC chief Dana White announced on Monday that all events are now postponed up till UFC 249, which is set to be headlined by Khabib and Ferguson - reassuring fans that the mega-fight 'will still happen'.

"We're postponing the next three events, but Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib, April 18 is still on and that will still happen," the 50-year-old explained to ESPN.

"We're going to follow these guidelines to not have more than 10 people in a room and we're hoping this all clears up by April".

"This fight's going to happen," he added.

"No crowd. Whatever it takes. Probably not even going to be in the United States, but this fight's going to happen."

The UFC have held out on cancellations longer than most other sporting leagues and White offered an explanation.

"This is what we do," White said. "We put fights on every weekend. The fighters want to fight. The fans want to see it.

"I've had nothing but positive feedback from the fans and the fighters. These guys all want to continue. So we will."
