Conor McGregor UFC news: Al Iaquinta wants Notorious fight but says Irishman is 'selling whiskey and doing other things'

Al Iaquinta believes a fight with Conor McGregor makes the most sense for him.

The American is hoping to fight again around October or November and has his eyes on The Notorious, who he says needs to get back in the Octagon.

He told TMZ: "That's the fight that makes the most sense out of everything.

"He's coming off a big loss. He got finished by Khabib and he had all the time in the world to prepare for that fight.

"I took that fight on a day's notice and I showed my toughness.

"We'd still be fighting right now if there was no time on the fight.

"I'm fighting forever. I'm fighting till I die. Conor's not doing that so I think that's the fight that really makes the most sense but you know he's selling whiskey and he's doing other things."

He added: "His stock is not as high as he thinks it is. He got finished in his last fight as far as everyone's concerned. He's dead. The ref had to pull the guy off of him.

"He looked like a sissy tappin' out like that, so, he's got to come back and get a win."

His comments come as Eddie Alvarez admits he is keen to avenge his 2016 loss to McGregor.

Addressing fans during a recent Q&A on Twitter, "The Underground King" revealed the loss to McGregor hurts him the most and that if he got another opportunity to get into the octagon with The Notorious, things would pan out different.

“You’ve had a lot of success in your career, but which loss would you most like to avenge,” the fan asked Alvarez.

The American responded, “Without a doubt Conor, I am much better than that,” the 35-year-old said.

McGregor and Alvarez faced each other at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016. McGregor was moving up in weight in order to become the first double champion in UFC history.

The Notorious dominated the lightweight title fight from the bell and dropped Alvarez three times, culminating in a TKO in the second round, making the Irishman the first fighter in the promotion's history to hold two titles simultaneously.

Since that fight, both fighters have taken different career paths. After being TKO'd in his rematch with Dustin Poirier in July of last year, Alvarez surprisingly parted ways with the UFC and is now currently fighting in the ONE Championship.

He has been in poor form of late, losing his ONE debut via first round TKO to Timofey Nastyukhin in Tokyo. However, despite the shock defeat he is set to face former ONE lightweight champion Eduard Folayang in the semi-finals of the lightweight Grand Prix at ONE Championship: Dawn of Heroes on August 2.

Meanwhile, McGregor is set for an imminent return to the UFC after his 4th round submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 last October.

Speculation has been mounting regarding the date of his return and the opponent he will be facing. Especially after McGregor's training partner and close friend, Peter Quelly, said that it was 'very realistic' that we would see the Notorious in the octagon before the year is out.

UFC President Dana White has seemingly ruled out the prospect of McGregor facing the winner of lightweight unification bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Dustin Poirier at UFC 242.

Despite White's comments, fans have speculated that a McGregor vs Khabib rematch might be too financially lucrative for the UFC to ignore. Other rumoured potential opponents for the Notorious include Jorge Masvidal, Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson, Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone.

With both fighters now competing in different promotions coupled with the comprehensive fashion with which McGregor disposed of Alvarez, "The Undergound King" will likely never get his opportunity to avenge that loss.
