Conor McGregor UFC fight news: Notorious called out by featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski

Conor McGregor has been called out by featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovskii.

The Australian is prepared to move up to the lightweight division in order to face the Irishman.

UFC President Dana White says that ‘Fight Island’ is currently under construction, and could be ready to host events this month.

Volkanovskii said: “"Who wouldn’t take that fight?

“You would be an absolute fool not to take that fight with McGregor. “His name is always going to be mentioned in the featherweight rankings and GOAT talks.

“For me, it’s more than just a money fight. It’s more about taking that win away from his name being in the greatest featherweight of all time talk, that would mean a lot to me.”

He added: “If I have to move up just to prove he isn’t the featherweight GOAT, I would do so."

The Dublin native has been called out by a number of fighters over the past few weeks, including Anderson Silva, and has also been heavily rumoured to face the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje’s unification title fight.

UFC welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman has also been linked with a big summer match-up with McGregor.

He told ESPN MMA's Brett Okamoto: "I'm gonna give him the opportunity, if Conor wants, let's do it. But Conor's quiet now. Who says no to a title shot? I've never seen this in history, who says no when the champ says come and get your title shot.

"Unless you know you have no chance in hell of winning. This might change the landscape of your fighting career ever. That's the only chance I can see people saying im'ma pass on that title shot right there."

"And this is about making history here. He says he's the pound for pound greatest of all time across 3 divisions. This is your chance to prove it, go out there and win a 3rd belt in a 3rd division. So why wouldn't we make that fight."
