Conor McGregor told Jose Aldo rematch at lightweight "ticks a lot of boxes"

Conor McGregor has been told by UFC legend Chael Sonnen and ESPN personality Max Kellerman to take a rematch with Jose Aldo when he returns to the octagon.

McGregor and Aldo had one of the most famous fights in the history of MMA when they met for the featherweight title in December 2015, with the Irishman winning inside the first 13 seconds with a beautiful left hand.

Since then, they both went on to win gold again, but have struggled to gain proper momentum in their respective careers more recently.

McGregor became a two-weight world champion by winning the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 after Aldo had reclaimed featherweight gold in an interim capacity by beating Frankie Edgar at UFC 200.

But neither man would ever defend those titles, with Aldo losing twice to Max Holloway in his next two outings while McGregor would move to boxing before returning and losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

And now Sonnen believes that the next logical step for McGregor is to do a rematch with Aldo, having beaten him so quickly last time out.

Speaking on Kellerman's new show Max on MMA, Sonnen said that the rematch makes a lot of sense, after the ESPN host had drawn the ire of fans when he suggested that the pair should meet at featherweight.

"I love the idea of a Conor-Aldo rematch," Kellerman said to Sonnen. "Does Conor have a chance?

"Let's say Aldo agrees to go up to 155 because it's a big money fight, does Conor have a chance in that fight?"

And Sonnen responded by saying that the fight "ticks a lot of boxes", and that Aldo is a perfect opponent for McGregor in his next fight.

"If you are doing the booking of Conor McGregor and you want to get him back on track, yes, he needs somebody smaller," Sonnen explained.

"He needs somebody that's purely going to strike with him and I think Jose Aldo ticks a lot of boxes."

McGregor was uncharacteristically glowing in his praise of Aldo's recent win over Pedro Munhoz on Saturday night, taking to Twitter to declare his old rival "a real legend".

It was a big turn from his recent Twitter activity, where the Irishman has made tasteless jabs about his former opponent Nurmagomedov's family and legendary UFC double champion Daniel Cormier in 'tweet-and-delete' late night posts.

He is currently recovering from surgery in California with his fiancee Dee Devlin and three kids Croia, Conor Jr and Rian after suffering a horror leg break in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier last month.

The Irishman has been training his upper body as well as spending time with his family, and has also been spotted around a number of celebrity hotspots.

He was recently seen hanging out with Justin Bieber at the Beverley Hills Hotel, as well as rapper 2 Chainz, and was also spotted at Bieber's 'Freedom Experience' concert at SoFi Stadium in California.
