Conor McGregor told he "wasn't as good as the thought he was" on UFC debut

Conor McGregor has been told his UFC debut wasn't as good as he thought despite dismissing his opponent in 67 seconds.

The UFC star is currently out of action having suffered a horrific broken leg against Dustin Poirier in July.

McGregor burst on to the UFC scene with a rapid opening-round debut victory over Marcus Brimage in 2013.

However lightweight rival Michael Chandler has heaped praise on McGregor's influence on the promotion after his debut while comparing his opening tilt to rising star Ian Garry.

Chandler told ESPN MMA : "As a lot of people said about Conor McGregor when he first came in, you see shades of Conor McGregor in Ian Garry.

"Conor wasn't as good as he thought he was but he was better than we all thought he was and I think that's how Ian Garry's going to be, I think we have a future champion on our hands.

"I shared the card with him in my last fight, Ian Garry, 'The future'. Let me talk about the man's physical attributes because the only thing more impressive than the man's physical attributes is his confidence in himself.

"He is extremely long and tall, and powerful for the division as we said. He is still just a baby. He's under 25 years old and he won't become a full man until he's 30.

"His striking, his ability to negotiate distance between himself and his opponent, the way that he slid outside of that right hand in his last fight and knocked that dude in the last five seconds of that round was nothing short of amazing."

Garry is also from McGregor's native Ireland and previously met his compatriot during his childhood with the pair pictured together.

McGregor was also quick to congratulate Garry after his successful debut at UFC 268 when he dismissed Jordan Williams in the opening round, with just one second left on the clock.

The world is currently at Garry's feet and he will be looking to follow a similar pattern to McGregor's meteoric rise to where he became lightweight and featherweight king.

At 33-years-old, McGregor is looking to make a comeback in the UFC after suffering three defeats in his last four cage outings.

He has demanded an immediate title shot on his UFC return, with the champion set to be one of Poirier or Charles Oliveira with their showdown scheduled for later this month.

A title shot at Poirier would be the pair's fourth meeting having already fought twice this year.

But the 'Diamond' has put plans for a tetralogy on hold as he focuses on dethroning the Brazilian next month.

As far as right now, for sure, it’s in the past,” Poirier told MMA Junkie. “I’m not even thinking about that. But he says a lot of s***. Keep talking.

"I’m not retiring, I’m 32, man. I’m feeling good. If anything, I’ll probably go up to 170, if anything. Honestly my goal isn’t to try to have the most title defences.

"I don’t know. We’ll see. One day at a time. None of that is a reality until Dec. 11 and I get my hand raised.”
