Conor McGregor takes big drop on latest sporting rich list

Conor McGregor raked in €41million in the past year – but it was not enough to stop him falling 17 places in the latest sporting rich list.

The Notorious was the fourth highest-paid athlete in the world a year ago but has fallen to 21st after just one fight in the past 12 months.

The Forbes Rich List shows that from June 2018 to 2019 the Octagon star saw his income drop to €41.5million from €84million.

Most of the money made by the fighter from Crumlin, South Dublin, came from his Las Vegas showdown with Khabib Nurmagomedov last October, which pocketed him €28.2million.

The rest of the 30-year-old’s cash came from endorsements with sponsors including Reebok, Beats Electronics, Burger King, Monster Energy and Budweiser.

It is the fourth year in a row McGregor has made Forbes’ highest paid athletes list after becoming the first mixed martial artist to earn a spot in the top 100 in 2016.

His highest finish came last year off the back of a €100million windfall from his boxing bout with Floyd Mayweather, which got the second highest pay-per-view buy rate in history.

The only other Irish sports star on the list is Rory McIlroy who made €34.4million.

The golfer from Holywood, Co Down, picked up €1.2million last weekend when he won the Canadian Open – his second victory on the PGA Tour this season.

The 30-year-old lives in Jupiter, Florida, and with sponsors such as Omega, Nike and United Health Group, he banked €27million in endorsements without hitting a shot.

In the number one spot is football great Lionel Messi who edged out long-term rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Barcelona and Argentina superstar earned €112.1million in the past year, ahead of Ronaldo on €96.2million with Messi’s former Barca teammate Neymar making up a top three of footballers.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is the best paid Premier League star, earning €29.1million, while Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Mohamed Salah make the top 100.
