Conor McGregor should be removed from UFC rankings, says Gilbert Burns

Conor McGregor should be removed from the UFC rankings after announcing his retirement, according to Gilbert Burns.

The Notorious called time on his career for the third time in four years earlier this month, but is still listed as the number four lightweight in the UFC rankings and is eighth in the pound-for-pound ratings.

Henry Cejudo was removed from the rankings and stripped of his bantamweight belt quickly after retiring last month.  Jose Aldo and Petr Yanwill fight for the title on Fight Island next month.

Burns, who faces welterweight champion Kamaru Usman at UFC 252, wants McGregor to also be removed from the rankings.

He tweeted: "Cejudo retired they took him out of the rankings very quickly let’s do it with Connor as well!."

McGregor was pictured training at Crumlin Boxing Club with Phil Sutcliffe over the weekend, hinting that he might make a return to boxing.

The Dubliner lost to Floyd Mayweather in 2017 and has suggested that me may return to the sport again.

Speaking ahead of his fight with Donald Cerrone in January, McGregor said: “It’ll be hard to leave the MMA game fully.

"I think that’s a great aspiration to have, to achieve that world boxing title. What a feather in the cap that would be, to be a multiple-time dual-weight mixed martial arts world champion and then to acquire a boxing world title.

"That’s something I always look to aspire bigger and reach higher and aim for the stars."
