Conor McGregor's sister sends emotional message to UFC star on her birthday

Conor McGregor's sister Erin recalled a story from the family's days pre-fame in an emotional thank you message after he surprised her by showing up at her birthday party.

The former two-weight UFC champion has been globe-trotting on his new Lamborghini yacht with family away from Ireland as he continues recovering from a broken leg. But he surprised his sister by showing up at the last minute to her 41st birthday party over the weekend.

Erin, who rose to fame of her own on the Irish version of Dancing With The Stars, was celebrating her birthday with family and friends at her brother's Black Forge Inn when he arrived unannounced. The fighter has been on a glitzy holiday, and wasn't expected home in time for the event.

And in an Instagram message, she recalled how at one point the pair were living in Dublin as working class youngsters, and he promised her they would become successful. "I'll always remember your words to me when I had no money to fix my broken car," she posted to her story.

"As I cried my eyes, [you said] 'it won't always be like this for you, I promise you sister' and true to your word it wasn't. What a journey we are on. Thank you for taking us all along with you. I'm #grateful for you showing me to never give up on my dreams."

The Irishman shared a series of videos and pictures from the event, where he gifted hi sister a luxury Rolex. He shared a photo of the pair at his Dublin hotspot with the caption: "Happy birthday my little big sis, I am so proud of you. I love you so much."

UFC legend McGregor is famously close with his family, often showering his mother, father and sisters Erin and Aoife with lavish gifts. Erin said in a later Instagram post: "So guys, I had the best bloody night last night. 40 plus one, surprise from my family and friends in the Black Forge Inn."

The fighter is currently preparing for his octagon return, where he expects to fight at welterweight instead of going back to the lightweight class he once ruled. He has returned to full boxing training, but as yet hasn't been able to do any full contact MMA after suffering a broken leg last summer.

His comeback fight has no date as yet, and despite insisting that he wants to face champion Kamaru Usman, it seems he will probably face another contender. Rival Nate Diaz has been floated as a possible opponent in a trilogy bout, while lightweight challenger Michael Chandler is also in the running.

McGregor also indicated that he will return to the boxing ring in future, after he has completed his octagon comeback. His sole professional fight against Floyd Mayweather in 2017 was one of the biggest in the sport's history in terms of revenue.
