Conor McGregor's second round defeat to Dustin Poirier wins lucky punter £540,000

One punter landed themselves a hefty £540,000 courtesy of Dustin Poirier's winner over Conor McGregor.

The underdog got himself a second chance at beating the Irishman having lost their first meeting back in 2014.

Poirier secured victory in the second round as he knocked out the Notorious one.

One person clearly foresaw the upset win and was prepared to bet a huge amounts of money on the American.

According to  VSiN,  the lucky punter put $200,000 [£146,000] on Poirier to win the fight at approximately 2.7/1.

This meant the win for The Eagle would give the better $740,000 - or £541,000.

The defeat for McGregor has cast serious doubt over his future with plenty of speculation regarding his next move.

A rematch with Khabib had been touted but those ambitions have been smashed by his defeat.

UFC chief Dana White appeared to question McGregor's motivation following the fight citing the riches he has amassed during his career.

"Look, there is two ways this goes - hungrier or I'm done, he's got the money," he said in the post-fight press conference.

"This is like Rocky III, when you get offered a 300 foot yacht, it is tough to be a savage when he is living like he is.

"When he was a young kid he was hungry, now he has got everything he ever wanted so I don't know, it goes this way or that way."

White revealed discussions with Khabib over a potential fight with the Notorious one but the Russian was keen to underline the fact he had seen off everyone in the sport.

He added: "I did talk to Khabib and he said to me, 'Dana be honest with yourself, I am so many levels above these guys, I have beat these guys.'

"It doesn't sound very positive, so we will see. He won't hold the division up. He is retired, I am the one who has been trying to make him do one more."
