Conor McGregor's explosive relationship with Dustin Poirier's wife Jolie - friendly back stage meeting to middle finger

Conor McGregor has had an explosive relationship with Dustin Poirier's wife Jolie - from a friendly backstage meeting to her giving him the middle finger.

Jolie Poirier gave Conor McGregor the finger on Saturday night after her husband's second win of the year over the Dubliner.

Their relationship has deteriorated quickly as McGregor repeatedly targeted Poirier's wife in the build-up to the trilogy fight.

Friendly backstage meeting

It all started on a much more positive footing.

The footage of Dustin Poirier's wife visiting Conor McGregor's dressing room six months ago gave no hint of the drama that would follow.

Jolie Poirier had just watched her husband stop his Irish rival in the second round of their rematch to level their series at one apiece.

And as an emotional and broken McGregor nursed his bruised right calf, backstage footage captured the exchange as Jolie responded to the Irishman asking how she is by saying: "I'm good, how are you? I just wanted to say thank you so much."

McGregor replied: "Congratulations, he fought a great fight".

To which Jolie continued: "Thank you for everything. It's going to help change a lot of people's lives," and then wished the Irishman a safe trip home.

Poirier's wife was referring to a $500,000 donation McGregor had promised to give to his opponent's foundation to build a gym.

He had made the offer during a cordial fight week which was in stark contrast to the build-up to their first fight in 2014.

Air of friendship falls apart

Their air of friendship quickly fell apart.

Poirier took to Twitter several weeks later to claim McGregor's team had stopped replying to emails and that the deal was dead.

McGregor, predictably, reacted furiously and at one stage claimed their trilogy fight was off. From his perspective, Poirier's team had failed to provide a detailed account of how the money would be spent.

Ultimately, McGregor instead donated the same sum to another charity in Poirier's home state of Louisiana.

Poirier, whose wife runs the foundation on a day-to-day basis, insists there is no lingering animosity on his part - but the same can't be said for McGregor.

Conor claimed before UFC 246 fight that Jolie tried to message him on Instagram

There was bad blood in the build-up before UFC 246 fight with Conor tweeting a video claiming that Poirier's wife Jolie had tried to message him on his Instagram, with the captions: "#SheLyinToYouBro #ThatsWifey #ProperIrishAnimal."

There was no context but McGregor has insisted it was real - but again Dustin was unruffled before the fight.

"If it was real and my wife was messaging him or something like that then it's a good move," he said. "But if it's fabricated or... so you know, me and my wife were laughing about it yesterday when I was at the grocery store."

McGregor taunts Jolie at press conference before the fight

During a heated press conference, McGregor again targeted Poirier's wife when he called his rival "Jolie's wife", a jibe which fell somewhat flat.

He then began to chant the same phrase, eventually convincing the crowd to join in half-heartedly.

Taunts continue after Conor was beaten in the fight

The taunts continued after the fight with Jolie exacting her revenge as she was seen showing a middle finger to Conor as he couldn't stand after her husband Dustin's win.

And the Crumlin native was vicious in his post-fight remarks when speaking with Joe Rogan in the octagon, reiterating his claim that Jolie Poirier had tried to send him a private message recently.

"Your wife is in my DMs, hey baby," he jeered as Poirier was making his way back to the dressing rooms.

He sarcastically invited her to an after-party in Las Vegas

"Hit me back up I'll chat to you later on, I'll be at the after party at the Wynn night club."

Jolie was seen making a crude gesture in response to McGregor's comments which came hot on the heels of a string of insults during fight week.

McGregor also insisted that the rivalry between him and Poirier was far from finished, adding that he felt he was winning the fight until his freak injury.

But UFC boss Dana White said afterwards: “I don’t like that. That’s not good. Leave people’s families and wives and all that stuff out of it. Family has nothing to do with it.”

In a dramatic postscript to the encounter, their third following McGregor’s victory in 2014 and his defeat in January, Poirier called his opponent a “dirtbag” when interviewed by commentator Joe Rogan afterwards.

Poirier accused the Crumlin man of pushing his fingers inside his gloves as they were grappling and said he was trying to tell referee Herb Dean about the cheating.

UFC President White said that he expects McGregor will fight Poirier again.

Among the fans at the stadium included former United States president Donald Trump in a sold-out T-Mobile Arena.

It means that the taunts between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier's wife Jolie could kick off again.
