Conor McGregor's delight after Ian Garry's first-round KO in UFC debut

Conor McGregor has expressed his delight after watching countryman Ian Garry land a first round knockout in his UFC debut.

The Irishman was watching from a resort in Dubai as Garry landed a vicious first round knockout over Jordan Williams on the undercard of UFC 268 in New York.

And Garry quoted McGregor's iconic "we're not here to take part, we're here to take over" speech after a sniper right hand put Williams' lights out following a round he had struggled in to begin.

McGregor immediately took to Twitter to share in his countryman's glory, telling fans he thought the performance was "incredible".

"You little f***ing daisy Ian!" McGregor said to his 9million+ followers.

"The step back, back paw and all ahahahaha just absolutely incredible!

"Congrats Ian Garry."

Garry told Joe Rogan in the octagon after the bout that he was excited by the prospect of beginning "the takeover part two", and guaranteed that he would be a world champion in the promotion.

"I just want to say, that was some hell of a knockout," Garry said in his post-fight interview.

"Jordan put up a great fight for the first round, for the first time in my life I felt a little bit of nerves, a little bit weird.

"I'm 23, making my UFC debut at MSG, it doesn't get bigger than this, we just shocked the world, the Irish are back baby!"

He paid tribute to McGregor at multiple points during his interview, telling Rogan that he was honoured to fight on "the biggest stage on the planet".

Garry brought his record to an impressive 8-0 with the win over Williams, having gone unbeaten on his run to Cage Warriors gold, which he captured this summer with a win over Jack Grant.

He struggled to find his rhythm early, getting clipped by a number of clean shots from the American, who was fighting for his life in the promotion after two straight losses in his first two bouts.

But Garry remained composed and landed a perfect right hand to finish the round, with the referee waving the bout off with just a second to go until the bell.

"I'm fighting on the biggest stage on the planet for a fighter, the most historical venue in the world," Garry continued.

"Everybody's fought here; McGregor, Ali, Mayweather, Pacquiao; everybody's fought here and now Ian Garry's fought here.

"A wise Irish man once said before me, as he stepped in this very cage, we're not here to take part, we're here to take over.

"And this is the takeover part two."

McGregor famously fought at the New York City venue in 2016, when he became the first fighter in UFC history to hold world titles at two weight classes simultaneously.

He defeated Eddie Alvarez in the second round of their UFC 205 bout to lift the lightweight title, having become featherweight champion less than a year prior.
