Conor McGregor's coach John Kavanagh offers coaching to Johnny Sexton to escape 'amateur pins'

MMA coach John Kavanagh has offered to give Johnny Sexton a lesson on escaping 'amateur pins' after an incident in Ireland's victory over England on Saturday.

Ireland captain Sexton had the full weight of 121kg England prop Ellis Genge on him in the closing stages of the Six Nations match at the Aviva.

Genge also appeared to throw an elbow towards Sexton's head in an incident that Virgin Media pundit and former player Darren Cave called a "cheap shot".

A video of the encounter caught the attention of Conor McGregor's coach John Kavanagh who offered his wrestling knowledge to the Irish team.

Kavanagh said: "Bring me in for an afternoon @IrishRugby and I'll have Sexton and the lads escaping amateur pins like this in the blink of an eye. If any of them can hold me down the lesson is free."

Joking or not, rugby coaches may look to the likes of Kavanagh for expertise in the area, with players pinning others down becoming in an increasingly common strategy in rucks.

Genge, meanwhile, could potentially be cited for his role in the incident. Striking with the elbow carries a minimum two-week ban for low end offences, upping to six weeks for mid range and then 10 weeks plus to a year for the worst offences.
