Conor McGregor retires: What happened the last time UFC star 'quit' sport

Conor McGregor has announced he is retiring from UFC.

But this isn't the first time the Irish MMA star has taken to social media to announce to the world he will not be stepping into the octagon ever again.

Back in 2016 McGregor sparked confusion when he tweeted: "I have decided to retire young. Thanks for the cheese. Catch ya's later."

The Irishman had already signed for a re-match with Nate Diaz, who beat him with a second round submission in their first non-title fight - McGregor's first UFC defeat.

McGregor was the one who pushed for the re-match, but following his sudden retirement announcement on Twitter was pulled from his Las Vegas fight with the American.

A statement on UFC's official website then emerged, reading: "McGregor informed UFC officials that he would not participate in any promotional activities, including a commercial shoot and press conferences."

Diaz didn't appear to take McGregor's announcement too seriously, and responded: "I guess my work here is done, I'm retiring too."

And it seems he was right not too as the Irishman performed a U-turn and the fight was rescheduled for a month later, with McGregor coming out on top this time.

McGregor's latest retirement announcement does appear to be more genuine as the UFC star isn't in line to step into the octagon to fight any one person at this moment in time.

His tweet, posted in the early hours of Tuesday morning, read: "Hey guys quick announcement, I've decided to retire from the sport formally known as 'Mixed Martial Art' today.

"I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!"

Dana White breaks silence as Conor McGregor announces his UFC retirement

UFC president Dana White was quick to respond too, giving the announcement even more credability.

White said: "He has the money to retire and his whiskey is killin (sic) it. It totally makes sense. If I was him I would retire too.

"He's retiring from fighting. Not from working. The whiskey will keep him busy and I'm sure he has other things he's working on.

"He has been so fun to watch!!! He has accomplished incredible things in this sport. I am so happy for him and I look forward to seeing him be as successful outside of the octagon as he was in it."
