Conor McGregor repeats promise to stop drinking and return to training

Conor McGregor has once again promised to quit drinking ahead of his return to the octagon later this year.

The former two-weight world champion has been enjoying life as he rehabilitates from his broken leg, and is often seen drinking at his plush Dublin pub The Black Forge Inn.

But he insists he will quit drinking ahead of his comeback to the UFC, where he is angling for an immediate title fight despite losing three of his last four outings.

The Irishman was in attendance at Bellator Dublin on Friday night, where he spoke about how he plans to get cleared for competition within the next few months and then quit drinking.

"Once I get the leg cleared and I get that feeling when I kick a body, step back in and out, then I'll be able to gauge time," McGregor told SevereMMA.

"Then I'm going to isolate myself, stay away from the pub, stay away from my Forged Irish stout, my delicious smooth Proper 12 Irish whiskey and dedicate myself to my craft 100 per cent.

"I'll give it a month or two of that and see how everything goes and then make the move [for a comeback].

"Im in no rush, I know there are a lot of people supporting me, I want to do them well and that's what we're going to do."

McGregor has been back walking for some time now, and expects to return to sparring in April ahead of a possible July fight date.

International Fight Week takes place in Las Vegas on the first weekend of the month, and he has indicated that it's possible he returns for that event.

He has no opponent in mind as yet, but told Mirror Fighting that he is hoping to get another title opportunity in his first fight back.

"Soon, it's getting there," McGregor replied when asked when he would be stepping back in the cage. "April I should be back sparring - I'll gauge it all then - I'd like a title, a title, I'd feel a belt.

"We'll see what happens with the weight, I'm feeling nice and strong, I'm getting there day-by-day.

"I'm only 33 years of age, I'm unscathed, never been bust up in the face, never scratched in the face so I'll be back.

"I'm advised to take it easy, but I'm shadow boxing a lot and I'm figuring out what way I'm developing a style."

Lightweight champion Charles Oliveira is slated to be facing Justin Gaethje for the title on May 7 at UFC 274, but the fight is not confirmed as yet.

"That's not booked yet is it?" McGregor replied when asked for a prediction. "Until it's announced we'll see what happens."
