Conor McGregor pictured speaking on the phone after announcing retirement

Conor McGregor has been pictured on the phone after he announced his retirement from fighting last weekend.

The Dubliner announced that he was hanging up the gloves via a social media post in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He posted the photo of himself speaking on the phone to his Instagram story, as well as a number of pictures of his Proper Twelve whiskey brand.

He walks away from the support with a record of 21 victories and four defeats, as well as competing in an historic boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

Mayweather came out on top in that clash, with a 10th round stoppage, in what will go down as one of the biggest box office sporting events of all time.

Before the globally watched bout, another high profile sports star was tempted by the lucrative and physically demanding world of the fight game.

David Beckham visited McGregor and the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, as he jokingly told ‘The Notorious One’ of his desire to test himself in the ring.

McGregor told Entertainment.ie: "He was at the Ultimate Fighting Championship performance institute where I prepared for the Floyd fight [and] put up a post and tagged me in it.

"We were talking about it and he said, 'It makes me want to get into fighting'.

"I was like, 'Say no more David. We can make that happen, you know we can make that happen if you want'.

"So we had a little laugh about it."

The former two division UFC champion had nothing but praise for the Man Utd icon, and continued by saying: "David Beckham is an OG.

"An OG of the whole picture from a fashion standpoint that I've capitalised on and from a sporting standpoint - his was football, mine's fighting.

"I have much respect for him and the empire he has built."
