Conor McGregor news: Notorious backed into 100/1 from 500/1 to become next President of Ireland

Odds have been slashed on Conor McGregor becoming the next President of Ireland.

Bookmaker Boylesports have cut the UFC star's odds to 100/1 from 500/1 after a number of bets from customers.

The Notorious has been very vocal in the battle against coronavirus and donated €1million worth of protective equipment to hospitals around the country.

McGregor also made headlines recently after putting money towards houses being built for homeless families in Dublin.

Late Late Show host, Ryan Tubridy, has also been backed to make the move to the Phoenix Park, with his odds crumbling into 40/1 from 150/1 to become the man to replace Michael D. Higgins.

Leon Blanche, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Conor McGregor is the latest celebrity to attract support for a stint in Áras an Uachtaráin.

"The Dubliner has being showing us his generous side supporting homeless families and our frontline workers in the fight against Covid-19.

"The UFC superstar is 100/1 from 500/1 to follow Michael D. Higgins as the next President of Ireland.”

Meanwhile, McGregor has called on people to reach "higher ground" - which for him was his comeback victory over Donald Cerrone in January.

Posting a picture of himself in handcuffs and another celebrating backstage after his victory over Cerrone, McGregor wrote: "I ordered all of my powers back to me and that order was followed.

"It is never to late to summon our powers and advance to higher ground. Never, ever too late!

"Whatever stage we are at. There is always higher power, and there is always higher ground. Good luck!

It comes after Tony Ferguson told McGregor to 'get in line' when the Dublin fighter laughed at his rival's weight cut for UFC 249.

The April 18 show was postponed but Ferguson decided to weigh in on Instagram Live in front of fans while claiming he lost 24lbs since the start of the week to successfully hit the 155lbs mark.

McGregor took to Twitter to mock his lightweight rival in a tweet he subsequently deleted, saying: "Hahahajaj. You will be bet to the absolute nucleus pulposus when I get you, kid."

Ferguson had been due for a lightweight title tilt before Russian travel restrictions ruled out Khabib Nurmagomedov for the event and Justin Gaethje stepped up in his place.

He claims that former two-weight champion McGregor and current lightweight kingpin Khabib will have to 'get in line' to face him when UFC action resumes.

Ferguson, 36, insists that both Nurmagomedov and McGregor will have to 'get in line' to face him.

Speaking to ESPN, he blasted: "I don’t give a f***. Seriously, I don’t give a s*** about what he says.

"This dude wants to fight now because I’m a value guy. No way.

"I can’t count on these two dudes (McGregor and Khabib). I got Justin Gaethje to worry about. They can get in line.”

UFC boss Dana White is planning to hold UFC 249 on May 9 to kick off weekly events on a 'fight island', the location of which has not been revealed.

White has met with US President Donald Trump, who is keen to see sporting events go ahead in the absence of fans if necessary.
