Conor McGregor lauds "phenomenal" Arsenal star Kieran Tierney as his favourite player

UFC superstar Conor McGregor may not be the most diehard of football fans - but he reckons Arsenal new boy Kieran Tierney is new Premier League superstar.

Tierney signed for Arsenal from Celtic in a £25million summer deadline day move but was ruled out of the start of the season after having a hernia operation.

The 22-year-old has featured three times for the Gunners in recent weeks, making his first appearances for the club following his recovery from a hip injury.

McGregor has been keeping a close eye on the Scottish star's progress and name-checked his pal on Thursday after announcing that he will make his UFC comeback in January.

Asked to name his favourite player, McGregor replied: "Nowadays there's a young guy, Kieran Tierney.

"He was the captain of Celtic Football Club and he recently signed with Arsenal.

"He's been a phenomenal supporter of mine, he's been supporting me over the years. He's risen up and he's a phenomenal, phenomenal football player.

"Check him out, he just signed with Arsenal.

"I'm in conversation with him and he's a great guy, a good kid, and I'm rooting for him."

Tierney shared the video on his social media accounts and responded: "Thank you so much brother! An icon and my hero. Learned so much from you. The King."

Tierney made his latest appearance on Thursday night as Arsenal secured a last-gasp Europa League win.

Arsenal's club-record signing Nicolas Pepe stepped off the bench to score two free-kicks and seal a Europa League comeback win over Vitoria and spare the blushes of under-fire head coach Unai Emery.
