Conor McGregor knocked out by Dustin Poirier at UFC 257

Conor McGregor suffered a shock loss to Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 257 this morning.

The Notorious was knocked out in the second round of the bout on Fight Island, Abu Dhabi.

McGregor and Poirier were meeting six years after the Irishman had KO'd his rival inside two minutes.

He went on to become the featherweight and lightweight champion while Poirier fell short of being crowned 155lb champion when he was choked out by Khabib Nurmagomedov two years ago.

The Louisiana native brought the more consistent and impressive record to the cage on Fight Island with McGregor enjoying just 40 seconds of action since his defeat by Nurmagomedov in 2018.

And it was clear from the opening round that McGregor faced a much stiffer test against Poirier with the former interim champion taking down the favourite.

And Poirier increased the pressure in the second round, targeting McGregor's calves before launching the fight-finishing attack.

McGregor was dropped and referee Herb Deans stepped in after a final barrage.

Prior to McGregor's loss, Michael Chandler made a very impressive UFC debut by beating Dan Hooker inside the first round.

McGregor is now looks set to face Manny Pacquiao at some stage this year.

The boxing great tweeted ahead of the UFC 257 bout: "Good luck tonight Conor! Let’s make 2021 the best year ever for fight fans."
