Conor McGregor heaps praise on Katie Taylor after Delfine Persoon rematch win

Conor McGregor took to social media to congratulate Katie Taylor after a hard-fought rematch win over Delfine Persoon tonight.

Taylor retained her world titles by unanimous decision and ex-UFC ace McGregor, who has long been a huge admirer of the Bray boxer's talents, was hugely impressed.

He tweeted: "Huge congrats Katie Taylor!!! Put that one to bed for sure, no questions! Top drawer stuff as always from Ireland’s greatest! @KatieTaylor."

Speaking to Sky Sports after the fight, Taylor said: "It's never an easy fight against Delfine, she's relentless so I knew I'd have to dig deep.

"They were two amazing two fights for women's boxing, we definitely did our part to promote to the sport."

Persoon had bemoaned the decision of the judges when the pair last clashed over a year ago but had no complaints in her post-fight interview, saying Taylor 'deserved to win'.

She added: "This time I respect the result. The weight was a little bit too much. I ate, ate, ate but I feel like I had not the power to hurt her."

Those watching were clearly impressed by veteran Belgian Persoon's dogged fighting style and Taylor's class in the ring

British boxer Anthony Fowler tweeted: "In close hard fights there’s always gonna be controversy but gotta say @KatieTaylor is a hero, a humble hardworking Irish hero, unbelievable respect for her always Olympic/world/undisputed."

American ace Andre Ward also shared his congratulations, saying: "Congrats Champ !!"

And Kildare star Eric Donovan said: "Delighted for @KatieTaylor she put it to bed. Head movement and footwork was a lot better this evening.

"Still a hard fought win and the champ stays the ultimate undisputed champion of the world. Congratulations Katie and big respect to Persoon. #TaylorPersoon2 @SkySportsBoxing."
