Conor McGregor hailed for stunning gesture to young Irishman who needs 'life-changing' treatment

Conor McGregor has been hailed for his stunning gesture to help a young Irish fighter pay for life-changing treatment.

The UFC star donated €10,000 to former Bellator fighter Ian Coughlan's fundraiser after a horror training accident left him paralysed.

Ian suffered the injury while training in preparation for a fight earlier this year.

After spending three months in Galway University Hospital, he was then transferred to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire where his rehabilitation continues through varied forms of therapy.

While doctors fear he may need to rely on carers to assist him with daily tasks, Ian is as determined as ever to make further progress in recovery.

The GoFundMe page set up in his name provided information about Stem Cell and HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) treatments available in Germany that would be suited to Ian's needs and posted a target of €75,000 for their fundraiser.

And when renowned MMA coach John Kavanagh tweeted a video appealing for donations to Ian's cause, his long-time confidante McGregor swiftly took notice and alerted his fans to it.

He said: "Guys let’s get together and support this young Irish fighter who suffered a terrible injury at a gym in Ireland.

"Coach John and the team at SBG are hosting a training day and my own recovery permitting, I hope to be in attendance. There will be signed fight wear also!"

To follow up on his tweet of support towards the young fighter, McGregor also made a donation of his own, pushing Ian closer to his €75,000 target.

And fans were quick to praise the superstar for his support, with one writing: "You just blew up this event to the moon. Awesome stuff."

While another added: "Good on you Conor McGregor, lead the pack, support your fellow countryman."
