Conor McGregor gunning for UFC title shot in first fight back after leg break

Conor McGregor insists nothing less than a title shot will suffice upon his return to the octagon after injury.

The former world champion is in the latter stages of recovery from a broken leg he sustained in the first round of his loss against Dustin Poirier.

He is targeting a return by the middle of next year - and nothing short of a chance to regain his lightweight crown will be enough for him.

The belt will be on the line next month when champion Charles Oliveira takes on Poirier in Las Vegas.

And in replying to a story about potential opponents for his comeback bout, McGregor tweeted: "I’m facing whoever the f*** has that LW title next. Deal with it. Take off your goggles and mark the trilogy “unfinished”. Deal with that too. The rest mentioned, after this. Deal. With. It"

McGregor is unlikely to be handed a title shot in his first fight back, however.

He has won just one of his last four fights and has not won a lightweight contest since he won the title by stopping Eddie Alvarez in 2016.

More likely is a clash with fellow contender Michael Chandler, or the completion of his trilogy with Nate Diaz.

Justin Gaethje, who outpointed Chandler earlier this month, is set to be first in line to face the winner of Oliveira vs Poirier.

McGregor will also face competition from Islam Makhachev who staked his claim for a title by submitting Dan Hooker last month.

Other possible opponents for the Irishman's return include Tony Ferguson and Rafael dos Anjos who are clinging to their own hopes of a tilt at the title.

McGregor recently resumed pad work and expects to return to full training by the end of the year.

He was due to take on impressionist Al Foran in a charity wheelchair boxing fight in December but the event has now been moved to March.

McGregor was beaten by Poirier in January when he was stopped in their rematch before he was unable to continue past the first round of their third meeting.
