Conor McGregor gives three letter response to Max Holloway's claim

Max Holloway put in an incredible performance on Saturday night as the UFC hosted its first show of 2021.

The American set a new UFC record for strikes landed in a bout after hitting Calvin Kattar with 445 significant strikes - smashing the previous record of 290.

Holloway won via unanimous decision after five brutal rounds of action and now looks set for a rematch with featherweight champion Alex Volkanovski.

But during the bout on Fight Island, Holloway shouted that he was the best boxer in the UFC and Conor McGregor was quick to reply.

Sharing a clip of Holloway's in-fight commentary, McGregor tweeted: "Lol".

The Notorious is preparing for his first fight in over a year against Dustin Poirier next weekend.

Ahead of the bout, McGregor has been told to put in an impressive performance if he wants a rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

UFC President Dana White White held talks with the Russian, who announced his retirement from MMA in October, on Friday and it appears the lightweight champion is open to fighting again.

White explained: "I thought he made an emotional decision; there was no need to make a hasty decision when we didn't need to.

"I talked to him and I told him to take his time and we would get together later on, and last night we did.

"The way he feels right now is he's accomplished all he wanted to accomplish but he thought [Charles] Oliveira looked good in his last fight against Tony Ferguson.

"And next Saturday we have McGregor vs Poirier and [Dan] Hooker vs [Michael] Chandler so his words to me were, 'I would never tie up the division and hold the belt away from anyone else. These guys have to do something spectacular and make me want to come back'.

"I have a feeling if someone delivers - it could be in the co-main event or the main event - if these guys can do something special, Khabib will fight them."
