Conor McGregor fight news: John Kavanagh cryptic tweet gets UFC fans talking

Conor McGregor's coach John Kavanagh has set tongues wagging with a tweet teasing a potential clash between McGregor and Tony Ferguson.

With the clash between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson looking set to be cancelled for the fifth time, Kavanagh appears to have suggested that McGregor could step up to take on 'El Cucuy'.

ESPN MMA journalist Ariel Helwani tweeted a poll with potential options for Ferguson, now that Khabib looks to be ruled out due to a travel ban.

The poll asked if Ferguson should take a fight with Justin Gaethje or wait for Khabib, but Kavanagh chimed in, saying: "Maybe there's a third option. . ."

The Straight Blast Gym coach's reply quickly went viral among fight fans.

UFC boss Dana White was keen to stage the lightweight title fight between Khabib and Ferguson at UFC 249 on April 18 despite concerns over Covid-19. The event was due to take place in New York before coronavirus ruled out that option.

A behind-closed-doors clash in the United Arab Emirates was set up in its place - but a Russian travel ban means that lightweight kingpin Khabib won't be able to make the trip.

"I hear they are looking to organise it with or without me. OK, go ahead," Nurmagomedov said on Instagram Live.

"The UFC told me that this fight 100% isn't happening in the USA, and even if it's not happening in the Emirates it will happen on this side of Atlantic," Nurmagomedov added.

"Currently I am in Dagestan and I am training and preparing every day. Although I don't know what am I preparing for. Because after we came to Russia we also learned that the borders are going to be locked.

"Now I don't really know what's going on. It's really hard to train and cut your weight when the whole world is locked down and you don't know what you are preparing for."

Ferguson tweeted: "You're hiding in Russia. Don't use it [travel bans] as an excuse to back out. You have been sent many locations, send us one."
