Conor McGregor doubles down on retirement declaration with social media post

For the third time in four years, Conor McGregor has declared his retirement.

The former two-weight UFC champion dropped the news on Twitter immediately after Amanda Nunes defeated Felicia Spencer to retain her featherweight title at UFC 250 in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The Notorious declared: "Hey guys I’ve decided to retire from fighting. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it's been!

"Here is a picture of myself and my mother in Las Vegas post one of my world title wins! Pick the home of your dreams Mags I love you! Whatever you desire it’s yours."

It came as quite the surprise, given the manner of McGregor's return to the Octagon earlier this year.

The Irishman wasted little time on his comeback, knocking out 'Cowboy' Donald Cerrone inside 40 seconds.

Of course, fans are a little sceptical as to whether McGregor is walking away for good, given what has gone before.

Certainly he has made enough money through MMA and his brief move into boxing - where he took on Floyd Mayweather - to ride off into the sunset.

However, fight fans remember McGregor previously hung up his gloves in 2016 following his defeat by Nate Diaz - only to quickly reverse his decision to exact revenge in the rivals' rematch, before beating Eddie Alvarez to become a two-weight champion.

Last year's 'retirement' also failed to stick, with the aformentioned return against Cerrone.

He had planned that to the be the first of three fights this year - before coronavirus swept across the globe.

UFC president Dana White has stated that McGregor hadn't spoken to him of his impending announcement.

And his reaction casts doubt over whether it will be a lasting decision by the Irishman: "That’s Conor. You know how Conor works. That’s how he does things."

But now McGregor has taken to Twitter once more to, in his own way, offer further confirmation.

The post was simple, a heart emoji followed by a picture of a cake declaring "Happy Retirement Daddy", seemingly from his two children, Conor Jr and Croia.

Mirror Fighting's Martin Domin understood that McGregor had previously been keen to fight this summer - only for UFC president White to tell him to wait and  fight the winner of Justin Gaethje's proposed title clash against long-time rival Khabib Nurmagomedov.

That fight is planned to take place in September.

As always with McGregor, after his latest declaration, it is once more a case of wait and see.
