Conor McGregor doubles down on football plans with 'talks' to buy Celtic shares

Conor McGregor claims he had talks over acquiring Celtic shares from Dermot Desmond.

The UFC superstar made the revelation in a question-and-answer session on Twitter.

The Irishman has previously been pictured in a Celtic shirt given to him by Kieran Tierney.

After being asked by a fan whether he was “actually going to buy Manchester United”, McGregor said: “A conversation came up regarding Celtic first to be honest. To acquire shares from Dermot Desmond.

“I am certainly interested in acquiring a sports team at some stage! Both Celtic and Man United are teams I like for sure. But I am open. I feel I could do big things for a club.”

Principal shareholder Desmond, who first invested in Celtic in the 1990s, declared in March that his shares were not for sale.

McGregor has signalled his intent to eventually buy a sports team after suggesting he could purchase Manchester United.

The Irishman has amassed huge wealth during his time in the UFC after becoming one of the organisation's biggest stars.

He reportedly pocketed just over £90m when he took on Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

McGregor has ventured into different industries with his own brand of whiskey and recently sold his share in Proper Twelve which saw his net worth soar to over €200 million.

United was valued at £3.05bn by Forbes in April, making them the fourth most valuable club in the world but Scottish giants Celtic would cost a fraction of that with experts valuing the club under the £100 million mark.
