Conor McGregor donates €25,000 to Irishman fighting rare cancer

Conor McGregor has made a generous donation of €25,000 to the GoFundMe page for a young Irishman battling a rare form of cancer.

The UFC star's donation contributed in no small way to pushing the total raised well beyond the €50,000 goal set by organisers Michelle Taylor and Kayleigh Glynn.

Stephen Burke, a nephew of co-organiser Michelle, has been suffering from a rare form of cancer known as squamous cell carcinoma.

Stephen had had two serious operations to treat his condition, but further treatments and options available abroad were not accessible in Ireland and so the GoFundMe page was set up.

In a message on the GoFundMe page, Stephen outlined what the funds were needed for:

"I'm 26 years old and in March I was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer, squamous cell carcinoma.

"I've had two big operations so far and possibly more ahead but now the options are pretty limited here.

"Some of the treatments I'm looking into unfortunately aren't in this country, they are in Italy, Spain, the U.K and Holland."

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), also known as cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, is a form of skin cancer characterised by abnormal, accelerated growth of squamous cells.

SCC can occur when DNA damage from exposure to UV rays trigger abnormal changes in the squamous cells.

If caught early, most SCC's are curable.

His aunt Michelle also left a message on the page to inform visitors on the situation:

"This cancer came on so quick, we had no idea that it would be this far.

"He is such a good hardworking lad, he has had two operations so far and a lot more to come but there is treatment available abroad that is unfortunately not available here and is just so expensive.

"We as a family and all his friends are devastated and will not give up until other options are tried so I ask you in good faith to help this young courageous man get the treatment he so deserves."

In recent days, Stephen was buoyed on by the support he had been receiving, saying:

"I know I've said it a few times already but thanks so much to everyone.

"The extra strength and kick it has given me seeing this support - I can't put it into words."

McGregor's considerable donation will surely spur him on even more.
