Conor McGregor donates €10,000 to young Irish fighter after horrific injury

Conor McGregor has shown his support for a young Irish MMA fighter by donating €10,000 to a GoFundMe page set up to pay his medical costs after an horrific injury.

Ian Coughlan, a professional MMA fighter, suffered the injury while training in preparation for a fight and was left paralysed as a result of the damage sustained.

After spending three months in Galway University Hospital, he was then transferred to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire where his rehabilitation continues through varied forms of therapy.

While doctors fear he may need to rely on carers to assist him with daily tasks, Ian is as determined as ever to make further progress in recovery.

The GoFundMe page set up in his name provided information about Stem Cell and HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) treatments available in Germany that would be suited to Ian's needs and posted a target of €75,000 for their fundraiser.

And when renowned MMA coach John Kavanagh tweeted a video appealing for donations to Ian's cause, his long-time confidante McGregor swiftly took notice and alerted his fans to it.

He said: "Guys let’s get together and support this young Irish fighter who suffered a terrible injury at a gym in Ireland.

"Coach John and the team at SBG are hosting a training day and my own recovery permitting, I hope to be in attendance. There will be signed fight wear also!"

And to follow up on his tweet of support towards the young fighter, McGregor also made a donation of his own.

His considerable donation of €10,000 quickly hiked the total amount raised and the figure now stands at €40,255.

It means that the overall target of €75,000 is now over halfway towards being met.
