Conor McGregor 'confirms' UFC lightweight title fight in July

Conor McGregor says he is 'super excited' for a UFC lightweight title fight in July, but stopped short of putting his name in the frame.

In the first UFC event to be staged during the coronavirus pandemic, Justin Gaethje claimed the interim lightweight title with an emphatic victory over Tony Ferguson in a behind closed doors event last Saturday.

UFC president Dana White subsequently revealed Gaethje will now likely face outright champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

He told ESPN: "I expect [Khabib v Gaethje] to happen this summer. I don't know if it will be the first one, but it will be on Fight Island - unless miraculously the world comes back together faster than I think it's going to."

And McGregor appears confident something is afoot.

McGregor launched a scathing attack on the lightweight division's elite on Monday night, taking aim at Gaethje and renewing his war of words with Nurmagomedov.

"I am going to f*****g butcher you," he said, speaking of Gaethje. "Your teeth. I’m going to put them on a f*****g necklace. Speak on my skills as a father? You are f*****g dead."

"It's me and Justin next as Khabib is the biggest bottle fighter in the game. Guarantee it."

McGregor last fought in a 40-second stoppage victory over Donald Cerrone in January, his first fight in 15 months, and it would appear the former two-weight world champion will not be leaving it so long this time.
