Conor McGregor claims he had talks over buying Celtic shares

Conor McGregor claims he had talks over acquiring Celtic shares from Dermot Desmond.

The UFC star made the revelation in a question-and-answer session on Twitter.

The Dubliner has previously told of being a fan of the club and has been pictured in a Celtic shirt given to him by former star Kieran Tierney.

After being asked by a fan whether he was “actually going to buy Manchester United”, McGregor said: “A conversation came up regarding Celtic first to be honest. To acquire shares from Dermot Desmond.

“I am certainly interested in acquiring a sports team at some stage! Both Celtic and Man United are teams I like for sure. But I am open. I feel I could do big things for a club.”

Principal shareholder Desmond, who first invested in Celtic in the 1990s, declared in March that his shares were not for sale.

The Corkman also once held shares in Manchester United but sold them to the Glazer family in 2005.

McGregor's recent suggestion that he could invest in United comes after the American family were condemned by supporters of the Reds for their part in the proposed Super League.

Despite the Premier League club eventually pulling out of the controversial competition, United fans have been involved in anti-Glazers protests at Old Trafford in recent weeks, calling on the owners to leave the club.

United was valued at £3.05bn by Forbes in April, making them the fourth most valuable club in the world.
