Conor McGregor challenged to fight 'without security' by UFC rival

Conor McGregor has been challenged to a fight by lightweight contender and former rival Rafael Dos Anjos.

The Dubliner is facing a number of challenges from a whole host of UFC contenders upon his return to the cage including the likes of Max Holloway, Michael Chandler and Tony Ferguson.

And he will need to secure a revival victory after two consecutive losses to bitter rival Dustin Poirier this year, Mirror UK reports.

Now Brazilian contender Dos Anjos has called for a bout with McGregor next year and added his name to an increasing queue to become the superstar's next opponent.

He posted as a caption of a video from the pair's previous press conference altercation on Twitter : "Lets meet without security to break up the fight. See you in 2022."

Dos Anjos and McGregor were set to touch gloves at UFC 196 with the UFC lightweight title on the line in 2016.

The Irish star was moving up to 155lbs in a bid to become the champion in the division while already holding his own featherweight strap.

But the showdown was postponed after Dos Anjos suffered a foot injury during training camp with McGregor opting to begin his famous two-fight duel with Nate Diaz instead.

And the pair came together recently at the weigh-in for McGregor's trilogy defeat to Poirier, where the Irish star accused his rival of "bottling" their previous title fight.

Fresh plans for the pair to meet could be welcomed by McGregor who may face the Brazilian with a view to challenging a top-five contender in the following outing.

Any top-five challenge would represent the last fight on the 33-year-old's current contract with the promotion and his future plans beyond the two bouts are uncertain.

But his immediate priority will be making a resurgence in the division he once was king, having slid down to ninth position in the lightweight rankings behind the likes of Dos Anjos and new Russian rival Islam Makhachev.

Although McGregor has been warned by UFC legend Chael Sonnen that he will be returning to a "different landscape" after his long recovery from the horror injury.

"It's going to matter who Conor fights," Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. "Very much so.

"Conor cannot be expected to return better than he left, that would defy every rule of basic logic that every human being has.

"You don't get better at something by not doing it, not practicing it, being forced on the sidelines by an injury.

"So if you try to put him back in there in a very meaningful fight against any of the top guys we're asking too much and we're going to make Conor a victim of his own success."
