Conor McGregor brands Dustin Poirier "embarrassing" after defeat by Charles Oliveira

Conor McGregor wasted no time in hitting out at Dustin Poirier after he was choked out by Charles Oliveira.

Poirier tapped to a standing rear-naked choke in the third round as he fell short in his bid to become lightweight champion at UFC 269.

And McGregor branded his performance embarrassing, claiming Poirier had been lucky in his two wins over the Irishman this year.

Replying to Nate Diaz questioning how he had lost to Poirier, McGregor said: "You lanky string of p***; he got lumped around and got lucky twice. That’s it, is what it is.

"[This was an] embarrassing night for him alright. That closed guard game. Wtf was that. Wow! Shocking."

McGregor is currently recovering from the broken leg he suffered in this trilogy fight with Poirier in July.

His weight has shot up to 190lb as he plots a return to full mixed martial arts sparring by April ahead of a return to the cage next summer.

The Irishman has dropped to No.9 in the lightweight rankings and faces potential clashes with Michael Chandler and Tony Ferguson as he looks to rebuild his shattered career.

Oliveira, who won the 155lb belt earlier this year by beating Chandler, will now defend his belt against Justin Gaethje in the new year.

The Brazilian absorbed some heavy punishment from Poirier in the opening round last night but then dominated the second session on the ground.

And he quickly took control of the third round before sinking in his submission and forcing his challenger to tap.

"I'm the world champion," Oliveira said. "I'm the man. They talk. I do it. They can hit me a lot; I'm going to walk forward."

Oliveira's first title defence came after Amanda Nunes lost her bantamweight crown.

She was choked out by Julianna Pena in the second round in one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.

"I’m not surprised motherf******!" Pena shouted following her win. “I told you; don’t ever doubt me again.

"Will power strength and determination. It will take you places. I definitely expected a win and the world is my oyster."
