Conor McGregor believes Ireland is 'getting there' in fight against Covid-19

Conor McGregor believes Ireland is 'getting there' in its fight against Covid-19.

The UFC star made the claim after the country reported 552 new cases on Sunday, which was up from 416 on Saturday.

He tweeted: "Today’s numbers have shown another nice decline in cases. Down almost half from where we were at the beginning of this lockdown. Promising! We are getting there, and WE WILL get there! You’ll never beat the Irish!"

Despite the rise from Saturday, Sunday's figure is a major drop from the daily number of infections that have been recorded in recent weeks.

Since Ireland entered a Level Five lockdown, there has been a steady drop in numbers, with many experts encouraged by the signs.

Speaking over the weekend, the Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: "We have more to do but we are on the right track."

McGregor has been vocal on the government's response to the virus since the beginning of the pandemic and welcomed a move to level 3 restrictions early last month.

But the Dubliner expressed his frustration with gyms closing under level 5 restrictions, which were introduced a few weeks later.

He said: "Every health official knows physical and mental health are key to staying well. Working out in gyms isn’t a luxury, gym owners have safety precautions in place. Gyms are an essential service. #OpenTheGyms."

The Notorious is continuing with preparations for his UFC return and is due to face Dustin Poirier on January 23, with a venue still to be confirmed.

Responding to a question from a Twitter user on Sunday evening, McGregor stated that he would 'commit' to the lightweight division next year.

He tweeted: "I will commit to the 155lb division for 2021 however. Some great matchups to be had here, as well as unfinished business. I will show the world once again who I am, and what I’m about. Trust that! 170 is in my thoughts also however. You know me for doubling up."
