Conor McGregor backed to choose "less strenuous" fight against Floyd Mayweather

Conor McGregor has been told a rematch with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather will be less strenuous on his compromised leg than returning to the UFC.

Former two-weight UFC champion McGregor is reportedly in talks to fight Mayweather again following their illustrious 'money fight' in 2019, in which Mayweather won by 10th-round stoppage. The fight was a huge financial success and sold 4.6million pay-per-view buys, making it the second highest-selling combat sports event of all-time.

If McGregor was to rematch Mayweather in his next fight, it would mark his first bout since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier last July. UFC legend Michael Bisping thinks the rematch is a good idea for McGregor, stating on his YouTube channe l: "For Conor McGregor, it's probably not a bad idea, because coming back and getting ready for a boxing fight is a lot less strenuous than getting ready for a mixed martial arts contest. Of course, I'm talking about the man's leg.

"They're arguing over the amount of rounds. They're arguing over whether or not this is going to be a professional fight. Of course, if McGregor is going to step in there against Mayweather, he wants the fight to be a professional bout because if he can pull off an upset. If he can get the job done, he takes away that shiny record. He would be the only man to defeat Floyd Mayweather so of course, if you're going to step in there you want that."

Dana White has played down any chance of McGregor rematching former five-weight world champion Mayweather, labelling the reports as "bulls***". The UFC boss went one step further and stated that he would need to be going through “dementia” to make a second fight between the pair.

McGregor's loss to Mayweather remains the only fight on his professional boxing record. The win improved Mayweather's record to a flawless 50-0 and he subsequently retired from professional competition. Since then, Mayweather has competed in exhibition fights and it's unclear if a rematch with McGregor would be considered a professional or exhibition bout.

Bisping said he understands why Mayweather would not want the fight to go on his professional record, stating: "For Mayweather, I also understand his side. He's like, 'I've been retired for quite some time. McGregor was my last fight in 2017, five years have passed. I'm out there boxing the likes of Logan Paul.' So why would I want to risk that when there is a lot of money to be made?'".
