Conor McGregor accused of "losing touch with reality" over Dustin Poirier trilogy fight

Fans have accused Conor McGregor of losing "touch with reality" after he claimed his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier was going his way before breaking his leg.

McGregor lost his UFC 264 trilogy fight against Poirier in July after suffering a broken tibia in the final moments of the first round.

The UFC star has made a quick recovery from his horror injury and started hitting pads again for the first time this week.

McGregor - who is poised to make his UFC return in 2022 - has piled on the pounds since July due to resistance training being his only form of exercise.

And the Irishman caught the attention of fight fans when he weighed in on the ending of his trilogy with Poirier on Twitter.

He wrote accompanied with a video of the fight: "Good angle. Can see the leg was broke before I even stood up.

"It was broke before the guillotine even. It’s why I went for it. 4 shots to zero here in this clip to close the fight before the injury. This fight was going my way 100%. But big congrats lads hahaha ye right. Rats.

"Can see the weight in those upkicks he was eating here as well. Which weren’t even the two heaviest upkicks I landed. Where was he going from open guard top here?

"He not like upkicks thru the face? Elbows down thru the crown? No like? Tough s***, see ya soon."

McGregor also claimed he broke his tibia from throwing a kick early in the first round, not one of Poirier's checks.

But fans haven't bought into McGregor's take on the fight and questioned his decision to throw kicks if his foot was compromised.

One added: "Why were you throwing so many kicks if you supposedly had a foot injury before entering the fight??? you’ve lost touch with reality man."

"Change the narrative all you want mcchicken burger. We all know if the roles were reversed you’d claim he was on the verge of being finished, just like you were," another added.

Another fan said there is more respect in one of Poirier's toenails than McGregor has at the moment.

"It's really sad seeing one of the fighters that got me into watching the sport of MMA being exposed so relentlessly and falling so far from grace that I lost all respect for him," they wrote.

"If he comes back strong , my support may grow for him again but at this point in time id much rather see Dustin fight for the title. There's more respect in Dustins middle toenail than there is in Conor."
