Conor McCarthy in St Mirren talks as Jim Goodwin also targets St Johnstone winger

Relegation battlers St Mirren have opened talks with Cork City to try and land Conor McCarthy.

The Buddies are keen to sign the talented central defender.

Saints boss Jim Goodwin is hoping to thrash out a compensation deal for the 21-year-old.

Goodwin is looking for another defender after Hull City recalled Sean McLoughlin after his successful loan in the first half of the season.

If they can agree a transfer deal then they would hope to sign McCarthy in this window.

McCarthy, who can also play as a right-back or defensive midfielder, is a former team mate of McLoughlin.

McCarthy was on trial at Bristol City at the end of last year and is also attracting interest from a number of English clubs.

Goodwin is also keen on a pre-contract move for St Johnstone winger Matty Kennedy but also faces competition from Aberdeen, who have far more financial muscle.
