Conor Hazard Celtic starting spot 'less of a gamble' than Vasilis Barkas blasts Hoops legend

Celtic legend Pat Bonner has backed Conor Hazard to keep the gloves at Parkhead – claiming he is less of a gamble than playing Vasilis Barkas.

Rookie keeper Hazard made the step up from third-choice keeper against Lille in the Europa League in his first competitive outing.

The number one spot has been a hot topic this season for supporters after Scott Bain and £5million summer signing Barkas failing to hold down a regular starting place.

It's a big week for Celtic as they look to start the league title fight-back tomorrow with a win against Kilmarnock before the Scottish Cup Final clash with Hearts.

Bonner has called for the 22-year-old to be given another run-out by boss Neil Lennon against Killie.

He told the BBC : "Conor has come into a Celtic side which is very unstable at the moment but why not give him the chance and get him in there?

"The other night he played, he read the game really well.

"He had one decent save although I don't think the striker got a good clip of the ball when he was through in the one v one situation.

"Conor has come in and why not give the young man a real chance now.

"I don't think it's a gamble putting him in on Sunday. It's more of a gamble putting one of the other two back in."
