Conor Counihan to take up key role with Cork footballers

Conor Counihan is to take up a key role in Cork football’s bid to restore former glories.

Counihan, a player when Cork won All-Ireland titles in 1989 and ‘90 and who managed them to their last success in 2010, has been appointed as the county’s project co-ordinator for football.

It’s a newly-created three-year post, with the key remit being the implementation of the ‘#2024 Five-Year Plan for Cork Football’.

The Aghda man stepped down as Cork manager in 2013 and since then has been involved with the Rebel Og development squads and is a member of Cairde Chorcai.

The five-year plan was drawn up on the back of a sharp decline in Cork’s footballing fortunes in recent years, which has continued into 2019 with relegation to Division Three of the Allianz League.

Commenting on the appointment, Cork chairperson Tracey Kennedy said: “We are delighted that Conor applied successfully for this position, which is vital to the future of Cork football.

“Conor brings with him a huge amount of experience in all aspects of Cork football, along with a passion and drive that is immeasurable, and on behalf of the county board, I would like to welcome him to our team and wish him every success in this new role.”
