Charlie Adam reckons Connor Goldson will run down his Rangers contract before leaving in the summer.
And he believes an increase in salary demands from the defender after lifting the Premiership title will be the reason.
Now into the final 12 months of his contract, Goldson appears to be in a stalemate with the club over extending his stay at Ibrox.
Talks between club and player have stalled and the 28-year-old will be free to speak to potential suitors come January.
Boss Steven Gerrard has made it clear he is keen to keep his key centre-back, but Adam reckons his time in Govan could be coming to an end.
The former Rangers midfielder offered an insight into the change in wants of players after a league title victory, admitting many will hold out for a big pay day.
Adam told The PLZ Football Show: “He’s been phenomenal since he came into the football club.
“He’s been there for four seasons, and it’s one of them. Rangers could have let him go in the summer for a bit of money, but they took the risk.
“They said they can run down your contract or sign a new contract, and at the moment it looks like he’s going to run down his contract.
“I don’t think Rangers supporters could be disappointed with that really. That’s what happens when you wins titles, and you come out earning a little bit less than what everyone else is earning.
“He’ll be looking to be one of the highest paid, and that will be the worry for Rangers, because they might not want to put that investment into someone who is a bit older, unlike a Ryan Kent or whatever.
“He won’t leave in January, because Rangers will be happy to lose him for free in the summer, but he has to get back to playing well and keeping clean sheets.
"At times against Brondby it looked like it was affecting him.”
