Connor Goldson named Rangers 'weak link' as former Hibs man turns Standard Euro spy

Ex-Hibs man Stephane Omeonga is urging Standard Liege to target Connor Goldson as he reckons the defender is Rangers' weak link

The Ibrox side travel to Belgium to face a depleted Standard side, who have been hit with three players receiving positive Covid tests, ahead of the Europa League group stage opener.

Omeonga, who now plays in Italy for Serie B side Pescara, had two loan spells at Easter Road and knows Rangers well.

And the former Belgian Under 21 star reckons Standard should look to try and get at Goldson, who was the Old Firm hero with both goals in their 2-0 weekend win at Celtic.

He said: "Rangers are a very good team and play with British characteristics. Their game is very physical and attacking.

"Up front, Alfred Morelos is their main goal threat and he is very strong. They also have Ryan Kent, a winger who came from Liverpool and Ianis Hagi is an exciting prospect who used to play for Genk.

"At the back, they have Connor Goldson who is a very English-style defender. He has a big athletic presence, but he's not very fast.

you can get balls behind the Rangers defence, it worries them. Standard have players who will be able to exploit them.

"With Standard's qualities, they should not be afraid of Rangers. For me it is 50/50."

Meanwhile, Rangers' former Belgian ace Thomas Buffel believes the hosts are favourites to beat his old team, despite admitting he is loving the work of manager Gerrard.

Buffel said: "In my opinion, Standard are favourites because they are home.

"If they played in Scotland, Standard would be fighting for the title with Rangers and Celtic.

"Rangers have a good mix of experience and youth, but perhaps they lack a few players at a higher class.

" Steven Gerrard has brought his football knowledge and experience and added it to the physical side of the game - which is essential away from home - and it works.
