Connor Goldson given Rangers exit warning as defender told he could face consequences of running down contract

Rangers defender Connor Goldson has been warned against being "greedy" in talks over a new deal.

The centre-back has become a key pillar of Steven Gerrard 's side, playing every game as the Ibrox club swept to the Premiership title last season.

The former Brighton defender is out of contract next summer though, and while talks have taken place over an extension, no deal has been found.

And former England international Danny Mills has warned that in a post-Covid world Goldson should be careful about running his deal down.

He told Football Insider : "It's typical negotiations in a very strange financial climate.

“We saw the big boys spending regardless and they are oblivious to Covid and it doesn’t seem to affect them in any way, shape or form.

"Even though Rangers are a big club, clearly finances are an issue, especially with covid. The whole situation in Scottish football has affected them.

“You have to be careful. Look at the likes of Jack Wilshere, unattached with no contract. Serge Aurier, unattached with no contract.

“Once it was brilliant to be on a free transfer. If you’re going to be greedy and ask for too much money you might have a little bit of an issue.”
