Connacht semi-final in doubt as several Sligo players test positive for Covid-19

Saturday's Galway-Sligo Connacht football semi-final has been thrown into doubt by a Covid-19 outbreak in the Sligo squad.

A number of Sligo players have already tested positive, while they are awaiting results on others which could influence their ability to field a team at Pearse Stadium.

The issue of how many, if any, players are deemed close contacts of those who are infected will also impact on the viability of fixture and Sligo are due to issue a statement on the matter tomorrow morning, RTE has reported.

The GAA has said that postponing a Championship game would only be considered where there is a two-week window between the game in question and the next round of the competition.

Both Connacht semi-finals take place this weekend with the final fixed for November 15, though there may be some wriggle room with the other three provincial deciders scheduled for the weekend of November 21/22.

Speaking on RTE’s Morning Ireland today, GAA president John Horan said: “We have always taken public health advice on these matters so it wouldn’t be our decision as to the availability of the team to actually play or not.

“We would actually be guided by the public health authorities, whose opinion we have to take and we respect continuously.”
