Connacht no longer swayed by big name rivals but Wilkins says they must do better against Leinster

Connacht no longer fear the big guns that the likes of Leinster can wheel out - but Pete Wilkins admits the westerners must find another level on Friday.

The westerners proved their mettle with an impressive showing in the round of 16 first leg against the Blues last Friday night.

Senior coach Wilkins puts that down to a growing confidence in the players in what they can achieve, no matter what the reputation of their opponents.

"In the past we probably looked at opposition team sheets and looked at the occasion and been two swayed either way, whether a team's at full strength or whether they have players missing," he said.

"Certainly that's not just when we played Leinster, that's when we played all sorts of different opposition in my time here.

"This shows that they can pick a good team and it will be a similarly good team this week, if not stronger from their point of view - but we have confidence there that we can deliver under those sorts of conditions.

"It's just excitement to be at this stage of the competition for the first time in the club's history and then for the first time for some of these players, there's just an enormous determination not to let this opportunity pass them by.

"So I think that provides us with enormous energy and incentive, and the lads can't wait to go out again."

Wilkins admitted that Connacht's selection meeting yesterday was one of the longest that he can remember as Andy Friend looks for that all-important improvement to pull off one of European rugby's great shock results.

"You want to reward the performances of the guys that did well last week," he said.

"Equally there are guys who have been banging the door down and were very unlucky to miss out on the 23 last week as well.

"So there's a balance to be had and we can’t just think we can roll out exactly the same thing and exactly the same way.

"We won’t change our fundamentals but we can’t just deliver the same thing and hope that it will be good enough. We need to go up a level.

"Part of the selection, yes, it's about rugby ability, but it's about guys that can handle that kind of stage - and we'll have confidence with the guys that we send up there."
