Connacht confirm departure of 12 players

Connacht have confirmed that 12 players will be leaving the Sportsground next month.

Kiwi hooker Tom McCartney, who is returning to New Zealand after six years with the province, is leading the exodus.

Also on the way out is one-cap Ireland back Niyi Adeolokun and his back three colleague Darragh Leader, along with experienced back rower Eoin McKeon, who played 137 times for the province.

Like McCartney, McKeon played in the side that beat Leinster to claim the 2016 PRO12 title in Edinburgh.

Kyle Godwin, Joe Maksymiw and David Horwitz have completed their two-year contracts after joining in the summer of 2018, while front-rowers Rory Burke and Peter McCabe have also completed their contracts.

Angus Lloyd departs to pursue a medical career - having passed his medical exams.

The departures of Colby Fainga’a and Robin Copeland, who are joining French sides Lyon and Soyaux Angouleme respectively, were already known.

“The nature of professional rugby means there will always be comings and goings," said Connacht head coach Andy Friend.

"I would personally like to wish all our departing players every success in the future and thank them for their contributions to Connacht Rugby, both on and off the field.

"We all share in the players’ disappointment that they were unable to get a proper send-off at the Sportsground due to Covid, but they can be always assured of a warm welcome by the club and our supporters at any time in the future."
