Connacht chairman John Murphy dismisses Championship draw claims

Connacht GAA chairman John Murphy has dismissed claims that he purposely picked out one team over another in the Connacht SFC draw on Monday.

The draw, hosted live on the RTE Six One news on Monday, saw Mayo or Sligo drawn against Leitrim in the provincial semi-final.

But social media claims soon insinuate that Murphy had selected a canister but put it back in the bowl before drawing Leitrim a few seconds later.

But the Connacht chief has dismissed claims, saying that nothing 'untoward' happened in the draw.

Murphy says that he decided to redo the draw as he was ahead of presenter Morrissey in picking the canister - who was still speaking while he originally drew the canister.

“There was nothing untoward,” Murphy told the Irish Examiner.

“I was running a bit ahead of Marty and I just picked one out and as he was still speaking I put it back down.

“The other side of it, there were eight to 10 people around the place with producers, a prop guy, a camera man, a Croke Park rep. It’s a lot about nothing, really.

“I’m not that big into social media. I just ran ahead of him (Morrissey), really. I noticed he continued talking and I put the drum down and off I went again.”
